UTLO OMEGNA 2026

UTLO 2026: One of the Most Spectacular Trail Running Events Returns to Omegna
This October, Omegna will once again host UTLO – Ultra Trail Lago d’Orta, one of the most popular trail running events in Northern Italy.
The 2026 edition will take place during the weekend of October 16–18 and will bring hundreds of runners to Lake Orta from all over Italy and abroad. For those who have never experienced it before, UTLO is much more than a race: for an entire weekend, the atmosphere around Omegna completely changes.
What is UTLO?
UTLO stands for Ultra Trail Lago d’Orta.
It is a trail running event that takes place on the mountains and paths surrounding Lake Orta, crossing forests, alpine villages, old stone hamlets and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the lake.
Over the years, it has become one of the best-known trail races in the Piedmont region for mountain runners and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
The start and finish area is located on the lakeside promenade of Omegna, where visitors can also find the event village with food stands, exhibitors, music and outdoor brands.
UTLO 2026 Race Distances
The event includes several routes designed for both experienced athletes and beginners approaching trail running for the first time.
The 2026 edition is expected to include:
58 km ultra trail with more than 3600 meters of elevation gain
34 km trail race
21 km trail race
12 km short trail
UTLINO Kids Run for children
The routes cross different villages around Lake Orta, including Omegna, Quarna, Nonio, Madonna del Sasso and Boleto.
In October, the autumn colors make the scenery even more beautiful, especially along the panoramic sections overlooking the lake.
How the Race Works
UTLO is organized as a semi-self-sufficient race.
This means runners must carry part of their own equipment, water and nutrition while using the refreshment stations available along the route.
The races start at different times during the weekend and the atmosphere in Omegna is unique: headlamps before sunrise, runners preparing at the start line, spectators along the lakefront and emotional finishes throughout the day.
Even for non-runners, UTLO is a wonderful event to experience. Many visitors simply enjoy watching the athletes arrive in Omegna or cheering along the trails and villages.
Why UTLO Attracts So Many People
Trail running has grown enormously in recent years and UTLO has become particularly appreciated because it combines sport, nature and local culture.
October is also one of the best periods to visit Lake Orta: fewer crowds, beautiful autumn landscapes and ideal temperatures for hiking, running and outdoor activities.
Many participants use the race weekend as an opportunity to spend a few extra days exploring the area, including Omegna, Orta San Giulio, Mottarone and the small villages around the lake.
